Dinajpur celebrated the historic Santal Peasant Rebellion Day – Santal Hul – with due solemnity. The Bangladesh Krishak Federation organised various programs at the Dinajpur Town Hall premises.
The day-long observance featured Santal dance performances, discussion sessions, and tributes to the martyrs. The event concluded with floral wreath-laying and oath-taking at the Nimnagar Balubari Memorial in Dinajpur.
Presided over by Krishak Federation President Tareq Kabiraj and moderated by Adivasi Samiti General Secretary Swapan Ekka, the discussion session highlighted the significance of the Santal Rebellion.
The Santal Peasant Rebellion, or Santal Hul, was an armed uprising in 1855 by the Santal community against British colonial rule and oppressive zamindar-moneylenders.
Led by four brothers – Sidhu, Kanu, Chand, and Bhairab – this movement stands as a unique chapter in British colonial history.
The sacrifices and fighting spirit of the Santals remain a source of inspiration for Bangladesh’s peasant and indigenous movements to this day.
