The government has increased the price of salted cow hides by Tk2 per square foot for the upcoming Eid-ul-Adha.
In the capital, the price of salted cow hides has been set between Tk62 and Tk67 per square foot, compared to last year’s rate of Tk60 to Tk65. Outside Dhaka, the price has been fixed at Tk57 to Tk 62 per square foot, rising from the previous year’s Tk55 to Tk60.
The announcement was made on Wednesday, following a meeting of the “Committee for ensuring proper management of sacrificial animal matters” held at the Ministry of Commerce conference room.
According to the new rates, salted goat (khasi) hides will be priced at Tk25 to Tk30 per square foot, while goat (bakri) hides have been fixed at Tk22 to Tk25. These specific rates for goat hides will be applicable both in Dhaka and across the rest of the country.
The meeting was chaired by Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir.
Other high-level attendees included Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon, Religious Affairs Minister Kazi Shah Mofazzal Hossain Kaikobad, Fisheries and Livestock Minister Mohammad Amin Ur Rashid, and State Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Sheikh Faridul Islam.
Speaking to journalists after the session, Muktadir said the government will provide Tk17.60 crore worth of salt free of charge to assist in hide preservation. Hides are expected to be stored in designated business areas as well as in mosques and madrasas.
“We are working to ensure that no hides are wasted during the upcoming Eid-ul-Adha,” the minister said.
He further noted that district and upazila administrations would summon representatives from local mosques and madrasas to provide specialised training on the proper preservation of hides following the sacrificial rituals.
