Water Resources Minister Md Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anee has stated that the government is working to revitalise the rural economy by excavating and re-excavating canals, increasing water flow, and boosting fish production to maintain environmental balance.
The minister made these remarks as the chief guest at a dialogue titled “Manifesto to action: Challenges and way forward,” focusing on election manifesto commitments regarding water, rivers, and agriculture.
The event was held Tuesday at the Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban, Dhaka University.
Minister emphasised that the government is prioritising sustainable water resource planning and management, as well as the development of agriculture and farmers by addressing climate risks.
He noted that, in accordance with the election manifesto, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is initiating development activities with the highest priority on public welfare.
As part of these efforts, the government plans to excavate and re-excavate 20,000 kilometres of canals, rivers, and water bodies over the next five years. The Minister further informed that measures are being implemented to prevent illegal encroachment and pollution of these canals.
Regarding major infrastructure, the Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anee announced that the Padma Barrage project has already been passed.
He highlighted that the construction of the Padma Barrage will ensure environmental balance, restore river navigability, and safeguard the livelihoods, agriculture, and fisheries of 24 districts across the south-western and north-western regions of the country.
Additionally, he assured that the Teesta Master Plan project would be approved shortly once expert opinions and feasibility surveys are finalised.
Addressing the topic of student politics, the minister remarked that the involvement of meritorious students is essential for bringing forth qualified leadership and national benefits. He stated that it is in the public and national interest for talented students to engage in politics.
The dialogue was attended by State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan Salahuddin Tuku.
