Amid intense debate between the government and opposition parties in the current session of the National Parliament over the July National Charter issue, independent Member of Parliament for Brahmanbaria-2 constituency Rumeen Farhana has sparked fresh discussion with a social media post.
According to parliamentary sources, opposition leader Shafiqur Rahman submitted a notice in parliament for a discussion on the implementation of the July Charter and the convening of the Constitutional Reform Council. Following that notice, lengthy debates took place between the government and opposition parties on the matter.
During the discussions, the government side delivered statements emphasising the implementation process and legal framework of the charter. On the other hand, the opposition criticised the delay in implementing the charter and procedural ambiguities, demanding prompt effective action.
However, independent MP Rumeen Farhana has alleged that she was unable to participate in this important discussion. She expressed her frustration in a post on her verified Facebook account on Sunday.
In her Facebook post, she wrote, “Discussions on the July uprising have been going on in parliament for two days. Despite repeated requests, I was not given the opportunity to speak. Why is the government so afraid?”
Her comment has generated widespread reaction on social media. Many have raised questions about ensuring freedom of speech in parliament, while others have also pointed to the limitations of parliamentary procedures.
