Bangladeshi filmmaker Mejbaur Rahman Sumon has earned another international milestone as his film Roid secured a place in the official programme of Austria’s prestigious International Film Festival Innsbruck.
The film, which explores folk culture, human emotions and stories rooted in rural life, will compete in the festival’s Audience Competition section. Two screenings are scheduled to take place in Innsbruck on June 2 at 9:15 pm and June 3 at 9:25 pm.
Before its selection for the Austrian festival, the film had already drawn international attention through screenings at the International Film Festival Rotterdam and the Seattle International Film Festival.
Industry observers have described the latest selection as another significant achievement for Bangladeshi cinema on the global stage, particularly as the Innsbruck festival is recognised for showcasing independent films focused on human rights, cultural diversity and contemporary social realities.
Held in the Austrian city of Innsbruck, widely known for its winter sports heritage and as a former host of the Winter Olympics, the festival regularly features works from independent filmmakers around the world. Previous editions have included films by directors such as Kiro Russo, Panah Panahi, Haile Gerima and Shaji N Karun.
Roid stars Nazifa Tushi and Mostafizur Noor Imran in the lead roles.
