Jamaat-e-Islami’s Nayeb-e-Ameer Dr Syed Abdullah Md Taher has warned that rejecting the Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s (BNP) reform proposal would amount to an attempt to create a new political crisis.
He made the remark while speaking to journalists in Chauddagram, Cumilla, on Friday after a meeting with election centre coordinators in his constituency.
“If BNP does not accept the reform proposal, it will reflect their irresponsibility and a move to create a new political crisis. The goal is to sow public doubt over the election scheduled for February,” Dr Taher said.
He added that if the election does not take place, those who have fled abroad and are conspiring from India may take advantage of the situation. “It seems BNP wants to return Bangladesh to an unreformed state as before. But the people will not allow the country to fall back into the Awami era of ignorance,” he said.
Referring to the government, the Jamaat leader said that if it retreats from its own decisions, it will prove a loss of neutrality. “If the government shows loyalty to any party, it will raise doubts about the possibility of a fair election under its authority,” he added.
