Rail communication with Sylhet resumed 18 hours after a fuel-laden freight train derailed near Mantala Railway Station in Madhabpur, Habiganj.
Train services resumed around 4:30pm after the Sylhet-bound Parabat Express from Dhaka passed through the affected section, said Bangladesh Railway Divisional Manager ABM Kamruzzaman.
Rescue work ended at the same time, although one carriage remains in a ditch and is yet to be recovered.
A five-member probe committee has been formed to determine the cause of the derailment.
The committee is headed by Bangladesh Railway Divisional Transport Officer Md Mehedi Hasan and has been asked to submit its report within three working days.
Initial findings are examining factors including train speed and possible defects in the railway line, he said.
The derailed train was carrying around 200,000 litres of diesel across five tankers.
An estimated 20 to 30 per cent of the fuel was damaged or lost during the accident, he added.
Further details will be known after submission of the investigation report, officials said.
