Protesting students have issued an ultimatum demanding the education minister resign by 6pm today and offer a public apology to the nation for “inconsistent” remarks.
On behalf of the protesters, Md Meraj Hossain, an examinee from City College, announced the decision at the capital’s Science Lab intersection at approximately 4:45pm on Tuesday.
“The education minister must resign by 6pm today and apologise to the nation for her inconsistent remarks,” Meraj said.
The students put forward a three-point demand, which includes a re-examination for those who sat for tests under “uncomfortable conditions” or were unable to attend on 13 July.
They also called for the cancellation of tomorrow’s examination and the publication of a new exam routine, insisting that the standard of question papers must be “student-friendly”.
Earlier, at around 3:45pm, the demonstrators took up positions in the Science Lab area, which led to a complete halt in traffic and caused severe congestion in the surrounding vicinities. During the sit-in, students chanted various slogans demanding the minister’s resignation.
The protesters alleged that despite continuing their movement since the morning, no government representative had yet come forward to hold discussions with them.
