The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) prosecution has announced that it will appeal against the verdict sentencing former minister Hasanul Haque Inu to 10 years’ imprisonment, seeking enhanced punishment and challenging his acquittal on several charges.
ICT Chief Prosecutor Md Aminul Islam told reporters on Tuesday at his office that the prosecution was dissatisfied with the judgment delivered by ICT-2 in the case linked to crimes against humanity during the July Mass Uprising in Kushtia in 2024.
“We are not satisfied with the judgment and will appeal to the higher court seeking enhanced punishment on the charges where he was sentenced, as well as challenging his acquittal on other counts,” he said.
Earlier in the day, ICT-2 convicted and sentenced Inu, former Information Minister, to 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment in the case.
The tribunal handed him 10 years’ imprisonment under charge No. 3, another 10 years along with a fine of Tk 1 lakh under charge No. 6 (to be paid as compensation to victims), and a further 10 years and a fine of Tk 1 lakh under charge No. 7.
However, the court ruled that the sentences will run concurrently, meaning Inu will serve a total of 10 years in prison.
