Production at the state‑owned Diammonium Phosphate (DAP) Fertiliser Company Ltd in Anwara upazila of Chattogram has been suspended due to a shortage of ammonia, a key raw material.
Officials said the plant in Rangadia halted operations around 8pm Saturday. Factory sources said that production depends on ammonia supplied by Chittagong Urea Fertilizer Ltd (CUFL) and Karnaphuli Fertilizer Company Ltd (KAFCO).
Ammonia output at both facilities stopped on 4 March due to a gas shortage, disrupting supply to the DAP plant. Although production continued for about six weeks using existing stocks, operations were suspended once reserves ran out.
The plant, under Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation of the Ministry of Industries, has played a key role in meeting demand for compound fertilizer in the agriculture sector.
Since commercial production began in 2006, it has operated two units, each with a daily capacity of 800 tonnes, said Managing Director Mohammad Mainul Haque. He added that ammonia has not been available since 4 March.
“Operations will resume once ammonia supply begins again,” he said.
