Supporters of BNP leader Ishraque Hossain continued their second-day demonstration on Thursday to press home their demand of Hossain be given the responsibilities of mayor of the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) immediately.
Hundreds of service-seeking citizens and DNCC officials and employees could not enter the office as main gate was blocked by the protesters. A significant number of people took part in the demonstration in front of Nagar Bhaban this morning. Ishraque Hossain is a member of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) international affairs committee.
Earlier the first joint Dhaka district judge and electoral tribunal gave a verdict on March 27 announcing Ishraq Hossain as mayor of DSCC. The Election Commission (EC) published a gazette notification on April 27, 2025 following the court verdict. But the arrangement is yet to be taken for Ishraq Hossain’s oath as mayor of DSCC.
Preferring not to be named, an old Dhaka resident who participated in the demonstration said that they have voted and elected Ishraq as mayor of DSCC in 2020. He said that Ishraque Hossain was defeated by tempering the voting results by the then fascist Awami League government.
He said that the Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Ministry is yet to take necessary steps to hold Ishraque Hossain’s oath taking despite court order and the EC’s gazette notification.
