A prisoner accused of crimes against humanity during the Liberation War died while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) early Friday.
The deceased, Abdur Mannan Howlader, 86, hailed from Bhandaria upazila in Pirojpur. He passed away at around 1:45am while receiving treatment at the hospital’s medicine ward.
Prison guard Sujon said Mannan fell ill at Keraniganj Central Jail on Thursday night. Following instructions from prison authorities, he was taken to DMCH, where doctors later declared him dead.
Inspector Md Faruk, in-charge of the police camp at the hospital, said the body has been kept at the morgue for autopsy. An inquest report will be prepared in the presence of an executive magistrate.
He added that the body will be handed over to the family after completion of legal formalities.
