India has appointed current High Commissioner to Bangladesh Pranay Verma as its next Ambassador to the Kingdom of Belgium, the Ministry of External Affairs of India announced on Friday.
He will also serve as Ambassador of India to the European Union and is expected to take up the assignment shortly. Diplomatic sources said he is likely to continue in Dhaka for one to two months as a successor has yet to be announced.
Pranay Verma, who previously served as Ambassador of India to Vietnam, arrived in Dhaka on 21 September 2022. He joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1994 and has served in diplomatic missions in Hong Kong, San Francisco, Beijing, Kathmandu and Washington.
He served as Joint Secretary of the East Asia Division at the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi from June 2017. bHe also held the position of Joint Secretary for external relations at the Department of Atomic Energy, where he oversaw India’s nuclear diplomacy.
He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and began his professional career at Tata Steel before joining the foreign service.
He also earned a Master’s degree in the Chinese language from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies in California, US.
