Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar has accused the government of unleashing Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) against Islami Chhatra Shibir across the country.
He made the remarks while addressing a ward president conference as chief guest at an auditorium in Johan Dream Valley Park in Jhenaidah on Friday afternoon.
“JCD activists have carried out hyena-like attacks and torture on elected DUCSU leaders,” he said, alleging that Shibir members were also assaulted in Chattogram, Cumilla, Pabna, and Ishwardi.
Rejecting claims that Shibir is a “hidden” organisation, he said the term applies to those who returned to the country after 17 years.
“The one who became foreign minister after the formation of the new government was the one who was hidden,” he said.
“Those who could not conduct politics on university campuses for 17 years are the ones who were hidden,” he added, claiming that despite propaganda and use of fake photocards, Shibir continues to receive support from university students.
Turning to the July Charter, he accused the government of misleading the public over the “Note of Dissent”.
“Although the government signed the July Charter, it is now creating a crisis over its implementation,” he said.
“To save the country from political crisis and further bloodshed, the July Charter must be included as constitutional law,” he added, warning that the party’s movement would continue in Parliament and on the streets until the demand is met.
He also urged the government to respect the mandate of five crore voters and implement the verdict of the referendum.
On the national election, he alleged that results were altered through “election engineering”, claiming a former influential adviser had admitted to such manipulation in the media.
Despite the criticism, he said the opposition is ready to work with the government to address the ongoing electricity and fuel crises.
He also called on party activists to join mass processions organised under the banner of the 11-party alliance on April 25 in metropolitan cities and May 2 in district towns.
