Police dispersed protesting mobile phone traders with batons, teargas shells, and water cannons after they blocked the road in Dhaka’s Karwan Bazar area on Sunday.
They had blocked the road to protest the launch of the National Equipment Identity Register (NEIR) system. They began the protest in different parts of the capital in the morning.
Later the protesters blocked the Karwan Bazar road, chanting various slogans.
To disperse them, police used water cannons, sound grenades, and charged batons on them. Several people were also detained from the scene.
At one stage, chased by police, the protesters entered the nearby Bashundhara City Shopping Mall. Afterwards, vehicular movement on the road resumed.
Tejgaon Police Station’s Sub-inspector Kaniz told Times of Bangladesh, “Upon receiving news of the traders’ protest, a police team went to the spot and tried to bring the situation under control.”
