An allegation has surfaced in Manikganj that a local Awami League leader arrested during the Devil Hunt Phase-2 drive in Singair was released after Tk2 lakh was given through his family.
An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) is accused of taking the money.
The accused ASI Arbikul Islam is posted at Shantipur (Baghuli) police investigation centre.
According to the allegation, Chandhar Union Awami League member Md Azahar Uddin Khan was detained from Baghuli Bazar on Friday evening and later released after he was taken to different locations and Tk2 lakh was collected from his son.
Several local residents confirmed the detention, while the allegation of bargaining over money has triggered anger in the area.
Denying the allegation, ASI Arabikul Islam said he did not arrest anyone and did not release anyone.
Singair Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Majharul Islam said the matter would be investigated and action would be taken if the allegation is found to be true.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (Singair Circle) Fahim Asjad said the allegation would be verified.
