Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is set to officially launch the Hajj flights tonight. Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism has confirmed that Tarique will preside over the opening ceremony at 11:30pm on Friday.
Ministry of Religious Affairs noted that the first flight will depart from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 12:20am Saturday, transporting 419 pilgrims to King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah.
Authorities have announced that all logistical arrangements are complete, featuring reduced airfares and an expanded schedule for the season.
This year, Bangladesh is expected to send approximately 78,500 pilgrims to Saudi Arabia, maintaining its status as one of the world’s largest contributors to the Hajj.
Among them, 4,565 individuals will travel under government management, while 73,935 are registered through private agencies.
Biman Bangladesh Airlines is slated to carry about 50 per cent of the travellers, with Saudia and Flynas handling the remainder. On the inaugural day, 14 flights are planned, including six from the national carrier and three each from Saudia and Flynas.
The pre-Hajj flight phase is set to finish on 21 May, following a total of 207 flights. This total includes 102 by Biman, 75 by Saudia, and 30 by Flynas. Depending on the moon sighting, the holy Hajj is likely to take place on May 26, 2026.
Return journeys are scheduled to begin on May 30 and will conclude on 1 July.
Goodwill gifts for pilgrims
In a gesture of support, the prime minister has sent goodwill gifts for the departing pilgrims. Lokman Hossain, the director of the Dhaka Hajj Office, confirmed that the gift items have been received and are being distributed.
Some items are being handed out upon the pilgrims’ arrival at the Hajj camp, while others will be presented to them after they board their flights.
The gift packages include Ajwa dates, miswak, petroleum jelly, water containers, ihram soap, backpacks, and mineral water.
