Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Wednesday said the government will provide assistance to farmers affected by heavy rainfall for the next three months.
He made the announcement in the Jatiya Sangsad while replying to a question from treasury bench lawmaker Kalim Uddin Ahmed of Sunamganj-5 constituency.
Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, Bir Bikram, chaired the session.
The lawmaker drew attention to the worsening situation in haor areas, saying continuous heavy rainfall has submerged large parts of the region, including Sunamganj.
He said farmers are struggling in the fields to harvest their paddy and urged the government, particularly the prime minister, to stand beside them.
In response, Tarique Rahman said he had instructed local administrations in three haor districts, including Sunamganj, three days earlier to take preparations based on weather forecasts and determine necessary measures in case of rainfall.
Describing the situation and the losses faced by haor farmers as “very painful”, the prime minister said he had spoken with the disaster management minister before the parliamentary sitting and directed him to address the problems caused by heavy rainfall in three haor districts and some areas of Mymensingh.
He said the government will identify affected farmers whose crops have been damaged by heavy rainfall and provide them with support for the next three months.
