A Dhaka court will deliver its verdict on 2 February in a graft case involving 18 people, including ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, her nephew Radwan Mujib Siddiq, and his sister Tulip Siddiq.
The case concerns alleged irregularities in the allocation of a 10-katha plot under the RAJUK New Town Project in Purbachal.
Judge Md Robiul Alam of Dhaka Special Judge Court-4 fixed the date on Sunday after both prosecution and defence concluded their arguments.
The Anti-Corruption Commission filed the case on 13 January 2025 against 16 individuals, accusing them of abusing power to secure the plot allocation.
Following its investigation, the ACC submitted a charge sheet against 18 accused on 10 March 2025. Charges were formally framed by the court on 31 July 2025, marking the start of the trial.
During the hearing, the prosecution, led by ACC lawyer Hafizur Rahman, demanded the maximum punishment, including life imprisonment, for the accused.
Sheikh Hasina, Tulip, Radwan, and 15 others were absent from court and therefore had no legal representation to defend them. Only one accused, Mohammad Khurshid Alam, who is in custody, was represented by lawyer Shahinur Islam, who sought his acquittal, claiming the ACC failed to prove the allegations.
Other accused in the case include former state minister for Housing and Public Works Sharif Ahmed, Sheikh Hasina’s former personal secretary Mohammad Salahuddin, RAJUK secretary Shahid Ullah Khandakersenior assistant secretary Purabi Goldar, additional secretary (administration) Kazi Wasi Uddin, administrative officer Saiful Islam Sarkar, former RAJUK chairman Md Anisur Rahman Miah, former director Sheikh Shahinul Islam, RAJUK former planning member Mohammad Nasir Uddin, RAJUK former member Shamsuddin Ahmed Chowdhury, Tanmoy Das, former assistant director Faria Sultana, Mazharul Islam, and former deputy director Nayeb Ali Sharif.
The case is part of a series of graft allegations that emerged following the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government on 5 August 2024.
The ACC filed six cases last January over alleged misuse of power and irregularities in RAJUK plot allocations, including the involvement of Hasina’s family members such as her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, daughter Saima Wazed Putul, sister Sheikh Rehana, and niece Tulip Siddiq.
Verdicts in some of these related cases, including those involving Sheikh Rehana and Tulip, have already been delivered.
The court will now rule on the 10-katha plot irregularities case, which has drawn widespread attention due to the high-profile nature of the accused and the political significance of the allegations.
