Four people were killed and at least seven others injured in a head-on collision between a fertiliser-laden truck and a passenger pickup in Purbadhala upazila of on Thursday afternoon.
The accident occurred around 4:30pm near Narandia Bazar on the Netrokona-Mymensingh highway.
Netrokona Fire Service Deputy Assistant Director Md Zakir Hossain said two people died on the spot, while two others succumbed to their injuries on the way to hospital.
Among the deceased, three were men and one was a woman. All of them were aged between 35 and 40 years. Their identities could not be confirmed immediately.
Police, fire service officials and local residents said several members of a family were travelling in the pickup to visit a local shrine.
When the vehicle reached the Narandia area, it collided head-on with a fertiliser-laden truck coming from the opposite direction towards Netrokona. The truck overturned on one side of the road, while the pickup was badly damaged, leaving passengers dead and injured.
After receiving the news, police and fire service personnel launched a rescue operation with help from local residents.
A 13-year-old boy who sustained serious injuries was sent to Netrokona Sadar Hospital for treatment. Other injured passengers were taken to hospitals in Netrokona and Mymensingh.
Inspector Sentu Mia of Shyamganj Investigation Centre said the accident caused a traffic jam on the highway, disrupting vehicle movement for some time.
The road returned to normal after police and fire service personnel removed the damaged vehicles from the highway.
