Matheesha Pathirana has joined the Kolkata Knight Riders camp at last. His arrival gives the team a boost at a tough time. KKR shared visuals of him reaching the camp. It ends days of doubt about his availability.
The Sri Lanka fast bowler had a delayed start due to injury. He suffered a left calf strain during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup earlier this year. That injury kept him out of action for weeks. He stayed under the care of Sri Lanka Cricket during his recovery.
Pathirana also had to clear fitness tests before travel. He needed a no-objection certificate as well. KKR coach Abhishek Nayar had earlier said the team hoped for his return in mid April. That plan has now worked out.
This is a big moment for KKR. The team has struggled with pace bowling this season. They missed Pathirana in key moments. He was signed to lead the attack in the final overs. His unique action and strong yorkers make him hard to face.
KKR have had a poor start in Indian Premier League 2026. They are near the bottom of the table. They have failed to control games in the death overs. Pathirana gives them a new option with the ball.
Captain Ajinkya Rahane now has another pace option to use. Still, the team will check Pathirana’s fitness before picking him. They will look at his workload after the rehab phase.
Even then, his arrival matters a lot. It adds quality and hope to the squad. KKR now have back one of their key signings. The focus now is on how fast he can get match ready and help the team improve.
