The first meeting of the Parliamentary Committee of the 13th National Parliament was held on Saturday at the Parliament building, chaired by committee president and Chief Whip Md Nurul Islam.
Discussions centred on a range of issues related to facilities for Members of Parliament, including renovation of residential buildings, security arrangements, and upgrading the Parliament medical centre.
The meeting reviewed progress on civil, electrical, and wood workshop works for the renovation of MP buildings located on Manik Mia Avenue and in Nakhalpara. Renovation of 156 office rooms at the MP Hostel in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar was also discussed.
Directives were issued to expedite the preparation, repair, and renovation of furniture for MP residential buildings, with instructions to maintain strict quality standards.
On the security front, the committee discussed strengthening 24-hour security measures at flats in both Manik Mia Avenue and Nakhalpara. Staff deployment for these buildings was also considered in line with previous practices.
The meeting recommended that a sub-committee formed to address sound system issues in the Parliament session hall submit a report with proposed solutions by 3 April 2026.
Several proposals were made to modernise the Parliament Building Medical Centre, including the deployment of specialist doctors for cardiac care, procurement of equipment, ICU ambulances, mortuary freezer vehicles, and medicine from reputable companies to expand medical services for MPs.
The meeting also offered prayers for the forgiveness of the spouse of the Speaker following her recent death, as well as prayers for the people of Bangladesh as the new parliament begins its journey.
Committee members Rokibul Islam, Mia Nuruddin Ahmed Apu, Mohammad Kaysar Ahmed, Md Shahidul Islam, Nayar Yusuf Ahmed, SM Jahangir Hossain, Md Saiful Alam, and Md Abul Hasnat attended the meeting.
Officials including the Chief Engineer, Additional Chief Engineer, representatives from the Public Works Department, Additional Secretary of the Parliament Secretariat, and the Sergeant at Arms were also present.
