Paramount has set a summer 2027 release for the next instalment in the Paranormal Activity franchise, signalling a return for one of modern horror cinema’s most profitable series.
The untitled sequel is scheduled to open in cinemas on May 21, 2027. Horror heavyweights James Wan and Jason Blum will produce the film through their joint venture Blumhouse Atomic Monster, which is co-financing the project with Paramount. Oren Peli, who created and directed the original 2007 film, is also on board as a producer via Solana Films.
Ian Tuason will direct the new chapter, though story details are being kept under wraps. The film marks the eighth entry in the franchise, which has earned more than $900 million worldwide across its previous releases.
Paranormal Activity began as a micro-budget experiment, famously made for around $15,000 before Paramount acquired the film and added a new ending. Released theatrically in 2009, it went on to gross $194 million globally and became one of the most profitable films in cinema history. The success spawned a long-running series that includes six sequels and spin-offs released between 2010 and 2021.
The decision to revive the franchise follows Paramount’s recent acquisition by Skydance Media, as the studio looks to strengthen its theatrical slate with established titles. Wan and Blum remain among the most influential figures in contemporary horror, with credits that include Saw, The Conjuring, Get Out and The Purge.
