The decision was taken unanimously during a SAOC meeting held on the sidelines of the 46th General Assembly of the Olympic Council of Asia in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, last Tuesday. The meeting was chaired by Prince Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuck, vice president of the OCA and president of the Bhutan Olympic Committee.
Representatives from the National Olympic Committees of Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka attended the meeting. Pakistan Olympic Association president and SAOC head Arif Saeed was present, along with Federal Secretary of Pakistan’s Sports Ministry Mohyuddin Ahmad Wani. From Bangladesh, BOA Secretary General Jubaidur Rahman Rana attended.
At an SAOC executive committee meeting in Lahore on 25 February last year, it was agreed to retain the disciplines and events originally planned for the South Asian Games. The 14th edition of the Games was initially scheduled for March 2023, before being postponed successively to March 2024, January 2026 and now March 2027.
The Games are expected to bring together athletes from across South Asia, continuing the region’s tradition of fostering competition and cooperation in a range of sporting disciplines.
