Pakistan, which has been acting as a mediator between the United States and Iran, has strongly condemned the latest attacks on the United Arab Emirates (UAE ) and called for strict adherence to the ceasefire.
Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said his government “strongly condemns the missile and drone attacks on civilian infrastructure in the United Arab Emirates last night,” reports BBC.
The UAE reported that it intercepted multiple Iranian missiles and drones on Monday, though an oil port was struck during the assault.
Sharif says on social media: “It is absolutely essential that the ceasefire be upheld and respected, to allow necessary diplomatic space for dialogue leading to enduring peace and stability in the region.”
Meanwhile, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, chairman of the Pakistan People’s Party and a key figure in the ruling coalition, urged restraint from both sides.
Speaking to the BBC World Service Newsday programme, he said both parties should “avoid an escalation” and “continue their commitment to diplomacy”.
He added that Pakistan is “currently still exchanging messages and trying to create confidence-building opportunities”, but warned that incidents such as the “attacks yesterday” tend to “complicate the process”.
