The Supreme Court on Tuesday approved the promotion of 1,000 lower court judges to higher judicial positions, including over 300 additional district judges elevated to the rank of district judge.

The decision was made at a full court meeting of the Supreme Court, chaired by Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed and attended by judges from both the Appellate and High Court Divisions. The meeting, held from 3pm to 5pm, discussed more than 20 agenda items.

Sources said the meeting also endorsed the promotion of over 200 judges to the post of additional district judge. However, the court’s annual judicial calendar could not be finalised due to time limitations.

The full court also discussed the case of former judge Kamrunnahar, who lost her judicial powers after granting bail to an accused in the Raintree case despite a Supreme Court restriction.

The meeting reviewed key administrative and disciplinary matters concerning the judiciary, with the presence of almost all Supreme Court judges.
