A mobile court operation disconnected more than 200 illegal residential gas connections in Shibpur upazila of Narsingdi on Tuesday.
The drive was conducted from Tuesday afternoon until evening in Kararchar Madina Jute Mills area of the upazila.
Assistant Commissioner and Executive Magistrate FM Nayem Hasan Shuvo led the operation, with officials from Titas Gas Narsingdi office and members of law enforcement forces present.
During the drive, the mobile court fined homeowner Awal Bhuiyan Tk2 lakh, Rowshan Akhter Tk40,000, and Md Muslem Miah Tk2 lakh for maintaining illegal gas connections.
Ahmad Ullah, manager (emergency) of Titas Gas Narsingdi office, said the drive was launched in the afternoon following secret information regarding a large number of illegal gas connections in various residences in Kararchar Madina Jute Mills area.
He explained that search operations were carried out in different houses during the drive, resulting in disconnection and permanent closure of over 200 illegal lines.
The manager added that homeowners had been secretly using the gas for years without any valid authorisation.
According to preliminary estimates, they had been using the gas via these illegal connections for nearly five years, causing a massive financial loss of approximately Tk1.30 crore to the government.
