A total of 142,983 cases were filed against BNP leaders and activists nationwide between 2007 and January 11, 2025, Law Minister Md Asaduzzman revealed on Wednesday.
He made the disclosure during the question-and-answer session of the National Parliament, presided over by Speaker Major (retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed.
Many of these cases, he said, were false and politically motivated, adding that 23,865 have already been withdrawn, while the process to revoke the remaining cases is ongoing.
The question was raised by Brahmanbaria-5 MP Md Abdul Mannan regarding politically motivated litigation.
Asaduzzaman noted that the government does not officially maintain statistics on false or harassing cases against political party members; the figures for BNP leaders were obtained from the party’s central office.
He explained that after the current government assumed office, four-member district committees were restructured to review politically motivated cases.
These committees examine petitions for withdrawal, certified copies of First Information Reports (FIRs) and chargesheets, and the public prosecutor’s opinion to determine whether cases were filed with political intent.
Cases considered unnecessary for public interest or harmful to the state are recommended for withdrawal.
Following the district committees’ recommendations, a six-member central committee was formed on 8 March, 2026, to finalise decisions on withdrawing politically motivated cases.
