Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday accused the opposition of adopting the language of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, particularly in its criticism of the ongoing gas crisis.
“Despite the challenges, we will take all necessary measures to resolve the gas crisis as quickly as possible. The opposition is now speaking in the same language as Hasina and demanding that every problem be solved immediately,” he said.
Fakhrul was speaking at a programme at Rangpur Shilpakala Academy, where assistance was distributed among underprivileged people.
He urged people to give the government sufficient time to address the crisis and said the gas shortage would be resolved soon.
The minister blamed the previous fascist government for damaging the country’s gas sector, saying it had destroyed the country’s only gas-producing company.
Speaking about development in the north, Fakhrul said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman wants to transform the region into an agriculture-based industrial zone.
He called on local people to cooperate with the government in implementing the plan.
The minister also said the government was working to recover losses resulting from the US-Iran conflict. The situation has pushed up the prices of essential commodities to some extent, he added.
Ambassador Mushfiqur Fazal Ansarey, Rangpur Development Authority Chairman Md Shamsuzzaman Shamu, reserved women’s seat MP Rejeka Sultana Fancy, Zila Parishad Administrator Saiful Islam and Rangpur Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Ruhul Amin, among other senior officials, attended the programme.
