One more person died from dengue in the country in the last 24 hours, while 750 new patients were hospitalised during the same period, taking the total number of infections this year to 27,022.
With the latest casualty, the death toll has risen to 77, according to the daily dengue report of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) released on Thursday.
Of the newly infected, 468 are male and 282 are female. The individual who died in the last 24 hours was a resident of Khulna. Among the divisions, Khulna recorded the highest number of admissions in the last 24 hours with 173 patients.
This was followed by Barishal with 121, Chattogram with 96, Rajshahi with 57, Mymensingh with 56, areas of Dhaka outside the city corporations with 47, Rangpur with 14, and Sylhet with three patients.
In Dhaka city, 230 dengue patients were hospitalised in the last 24 hours. During this period, 52 new patients were admitted to government and autonomous hospitals in the capital, while 56 were hospitalised in private hospitals and clinics.
Meanwhile, 659 patients were discharged from hospitals across the country in the last 24 hours. Since the beginning of the year, a total of 25,033 patients have been discharged after recovery. According to the DGHS, of the total infected this year, 16,701 are male and 10,316 are female.
An age-wise analysis reveals that the highest number of cases was recorded among those aged 21 to 25 years, standing at 3,810. This is followed by 3,805 cases in the 26 to 30 age group, and 3,609 cases in the 16 to 20 age group.
Of the 77 people who have died of dengue this year, 32 were male and 45 were female. The highest number of fatalities was recorded in the 26 to 30 age group, which saw 14 deaths.
Division-wise, Barishal has registered the highest number of dengue cases so far this year with 4,750 infections. Chattogram follows with 4,285 cases, while Khulna has recorded 3,773 cases.
The monthly data highlights the growing severity of the outbreak. In July, 9,206 dengue patients were hospitalised, while 1,712 patients have been hospitalised so far in August.
