NVIDIA has announced a $1billion investment in electronics company Nokia. The deal is announced to accelerate innovation in AI-powered radio access networks (AI-RAN) and lead the transition from 5G to 6G.
As part of the partnership, Nokia will expand its global product portfolio with AI-RAN solutions built on NVIDIA’s platform. The U.S. chipmaker also introduced a 6 G-ready computing platform designed to combine connectivity, computing and sensing capabilities. They expect the move to redefine mobile connectivity worldwide.
NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang said the partnership marks a “generational platform shift” that will help the US regain global leadership in telecommunications. Justin Hotard, the CEO of Nokia, said, “Our partnership with NVIDIA, and their investment in Nokia, will accelerate AI-RAN innovation to put an AI data centre in everyone’s pocket.”
According to Omdia, a global technology research and advisory firm, the global RAN market could exceed $200 billion by 2030. From drones to AR/VR glasses, this partnership is expected to improve performance, energy efficiency and user experience.
According to the news, Nokia’s share soared 22% higher. NVIDIA’s market valuation has also grown since then. They are on the verge of becoming the first company worth $5 trillion. This is not the first big investment made by the AI computing leader. In September, they committed a $5 billion investment in Intel. Then they’ve announced it’s $100 billion investment into OpenAI.
