Supporters of Gono Odhikar Parishad blocked roads in Chattogram city on Saturday morning which continued till late afternoon, protesting the attack on their leaders and activists, including party president Nurul Haque Nur.
The protesters vowed to continue demonstrations until the Jatiya Party is banned and those behind Friday’s attack in Kakrail are punished. The Gono Odhikar Parishad had earlier announced a nationwide protest programme, with road blockades in Chattogram forming part of the central plan.
The activists of Gono Odhikar Parishad kick started the blocked on road near Gate No.2 in Chattogram city late Friday night. The demonstrators occupied the street, lit tyres on fire, and shouted slogans demanding justice, accusing the assault of being pre-planned. They warned of launching tougher movements if action was not taken promptly. Buses, trucks and other vehicles were halted, leaving hundreds of passengers and transport workers stranded.
Around 11am, protesters took over the road, shouting slogans such as “Blockade, Blockade, Countrywide Blockade. ” They set tyres on fire at several points to create barricades, intensifying the disruption.
Nur was critically injured on Friday night in renewed clashes between Gono Odhikar Parishad and Jatiya Party activists in front of the Jatiya Party headquarters in Kakrail, Dhaka.
