National University (NU) Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr ASM Amanullah has expressed deep shock and sorrow over the death of Professor Abul Kasem Fazlul Huq, Syndicate Member of National University, in a condolence message issued on 5 July 2026 in Bangladesh, according to a press release said. The statement confirmed that the university community is mourning the loss of the prominent academic, literary figure and former Chairman of the Department of Bengali at the University of Dhaka.
Professor Abul Kasem Fazlul Huq was also President of Bangla Academy and a respected intellectual, state thinker and long-serving member of the National University Syndicate. His death has been described as a significant loss to the country’s academic and cultural community.
In his message, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr ASM Amanullah said Professor Huq was a distinguished intellectual and one of the key contributors to ensuring the use of the Bengali language at all levels. He noted that Huq’s guidance and contributions as a Syndicate Member would remain memorable to the university, adding that his work in literature, politics, philosophy and culture would be remembered with respect by the nation.
He further said that the country had lost a committed progressive thinker and an outstanding educator through his death. The Vice-Chancellor prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul and expressed deep sympathy to the bereaved family.
All teachers, officers and staff of National University have expressed profound grief at his passing.
