A new preview for Dark Knights of Steel II has hinted at the arrival of a formidable force capable of challenging Darkseid, expanding the mythology of DC’s acclaimed medieval Elseworlds universe. According to ScreenRant, the upcoming series will delve deeper into the lore of Earth-118 while continuing unresolved storylines from earlier instalments.
While DC’s Absolute Universe continues to attract attention, with an animated Absolute Batman television series currently in development, 2026 has also become a major year for DC’s Elseworlds titles. Batman: Gargoyle of Gotham recently concluded its four-issue run, while Dark Knights of Steel has returned after a lengthy break.
First announced in April, Dark Knights of Steel II recently unveiled its first preview pages. Like its predecessor, the sequel will span 12 issues. Although DC has not confirmed its full publication schedule, the new series promises to explore more of Earth-118’s medieval world while resolving storylines left unfinished in Dark Knights of Steel and Dark Knights of Steel: Allwinter.
The story follows a League formed through powerful alliances after the events of the original series. However, General Amanda Waller’s betrayal, including the murder of Alfred/J’onn J’onzz, remains undiscovered by the League and continues to cast a shadow over its future.
DC has revealed little about Aquaman’s role in the sequel, but the cover of the first issue confirms that he will play a significant part in the story.
According to the official synopsis, the sequel begins after a spaceship from a doomed planet forever changed the medieval world. Kingdoms rose and fell, hidden betrayals emerged and a League was formed. Now, an ancient war beneath the sea threatens to erupt. If the League hopes to protect its kingdoms, it must first expose traitors hiding within its own ranks.
The conflict also introduces an ancient battle involving “the divinity of the sea” and Darkseid, who once fought for control of all tides. The preview suggests this long-forgotten war will become central to the new storyline.
A week after the launch of Dark Knights of Steel II #1, DC will also release Dark Knights of Steel II Special: Heir to the Sea #1. The standalone issue reprints Aquaman’s origin story from the backup feature in Dark Knights of Steel: Allwinter, highlighting its importance to the sequel’s narrative.
DC describes the new series as a 12-issue saga in which an ancient war rises from beneath the ocean, bringing with it a force capable of destroying the peace the League fought to secure. At the same time, a hidden traitor threatens to tear the heroes apart from within, setting the stage for what DC calls the universe’s most dangerous era yet.
The original series revealed General Amanda Waller as the mysterious traitor responsible for killing Alfred/J’onn J’onzz. She is expected to continue manipulating events from the shadows in the sequel, although she may not be its primary antagonist. The story also hints that Aquaman could eventually join the League once her treachery comes to light. According to ScreenRant.
