An NGO worker was killed in a road accident on the Dhaka–Barishal highway in Madaripur after being run over by an unidentified vehicle amid dense fog early Sunday morning.
The deceased was identified as Suman Sardar, 31, a field organiser of Shariatpur Development Society, working at its Rajoir branch.
He was the son of Tajul Islam of Tulasar village under Shariatpur municipality.
According to highway police and colleagues, Suman was travelling by motorcycle from his home in Shariatpur to Rajoir in Madaripur when the accident occurred at a place known as Samaddar. Due to poor visibility caused by thick fog, he was hit by a vehicle and sustained critical injuries.
At around the same time, a highway police patrol team travelling from Barishal towards Dhaka noticed Suman lying injured by the roadside. The officers rescued him and rushed him to Rajoir Upazila Health Complex, where on-duty doctors declared him dead.
Officer in Charge of Rajoir Police Station Sheikh Md Aminul Islam confirmed the incident. He said the vehicle responsible for the accident could not be identified, adding that legal steps were being taken in connection with the death.
The accident adds to growing concerns over road safety during the winter season, when dense fog frequently reduces visibility on highways across the region.
