Newcastle give Matthias Jaissle his first Premier League victory as Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa punish Tottenham in a 2-0 win, leaving Roberto de Zerbi’s side bottom without a league goal this season.
The Magpies break the deadlock in the 62nd minute after Tottenham waste several chances. New signing Nico Gonzalez, making his debut following his £52m move from Manchester City, starts the attack with an excellent crossfield pass to Amar Dedic.
Dedic heads the ball into Elanga’s path. The Swedish winger creates space away from former Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali, turns sharply and fires against the post and into the net.
Elanga also scores in Newcastle’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool on Sunday. His latest goal gives Jaissle the breakthrough he needs after a promising opening to his Newcastle reign.
The Magpies double their advantage 10 minutes later. Nick Woltemade heads a corner towards Wissa, who produces an acrobatic finish to register his first Premier League goal since December.
Wissa joined Newcastle from Brentford for £55m after scoring 19 league goals in 2024-25. Injuries restricted him to 19 Premier League appearances last season, but he now delivers an important moment for his new club.
Tottenham create enough opportunities to regret the result. Omar Marmoush, making his debut on loan from Manchester City, wastes a major chance when he sidefoots wide from inside the six-yard box.
The Egyptian forward also shoots wide after a strong run and later forces a comfortable save from Lukas Hornicek.
Pedro Porro goes close twice, while substitute Dominic Solanke sees a late effort cleared off the line by Lewis Hall. Yet Tottenham fail to score for a second consecutive league match.
The defeat also makes Tonali’s return to St James’ Park miserable. The Italy midfielder left Newcastle for Spurs in a £100m summer move and receives relentless boos from the travelling supporters.
Fans celebrate again when De Zerbi replaces him with Solanke while Tottenham trail 2-0.
Newcastle climb to fourth after taking four points from their opening two league matches. They also pushed Liverpool close last weekend and beat West Bromwich Albion in the Carabao Cup.
For Jaissle, the early signs look encouraging. The 38-year-old German arrived from Al-Ahli without Premier League experience after Eddie Howe’s departure, but Newcastle now look capable of competing despite losing several key players.
