Law Minister Md Asaduzzaman has confirmed that the new president will be elected during the regular parliamentary session scheduled for September.
He said, “There is no need to convene a special session of Parliament for the election. The new president will be chosen in the September session.”
The minister made the remarks while speaking to reporters at the CIRDAP auditorium in the capital on Saturday, UNB reports.
Asked whether legal action would be taken against recently resigned President Mohammed Shahabuddin, Asaduzzaman said he did not wish to make any comment on the matter at this time.
President Shahabuddin resigned from office on Friday citing ill health. He submitted his resignation letter to Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad in the afternoon.
In line with constitutional provisions, Speaker Hafiz Uddin assumed the responsibilities of Acting President immediately after the resignation.
