Nabisco Biscuit & Bread Factory Ltd has been fined Tk2 lakh after inspectors found biscuits weighing less than the amounts declared on their packaging and conflicting weight information on the same packets, the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) said on Sunday.
The penalty followed a mobile court operation in Dhaka’s Tejgaon Industrial Area under Section 24(41) of the Weights and Measures Standards Act, 2018.
During the inspection, several Nabisco brands were found to contain less product than the weight stated on their registered wrappers. Different weight declarations also appeared on the front and back of identical packets, BSTI said.
Such labelling could mislead consumers and breached existing law, according to the regulator.
Nabisco was ordered to ensure that the weight of its products matches the information printed on the packaging before they are manufactured, sold or marketed.
Further violations would lead to tougher legal action, BSTI warned.
BSTI Executive Magistrate Lutfunnesa Khanam led the operation, with assistance from Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
Field Officer Sumaiya Afroz Liza served as BSTI’s prosecuting officer, while Inspector (Metrology) Rafi Mohammad Itmam also attended the drive.
Market surveillance and mobile court operations will continue to protect consumer rights, ensure accurate weights and support fair trading practices, BSTI said.
