The number of murder cases has surged during the 13 months of the interim government, but officials say the rise is largely the result of previously concealed incidents now being brought to light.
According to crime statistics reviewed from 2020 through August 2025, a significant shift in reporting has taken place since the Interim Government took charge last year, the Chief Adviser’s press wing stated on Monday, reports UNB.
It revealed that at least 1,130 murders committed during the 16-year rule of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina were only registered following the August 2024 revolution. Many of these cases had earlier been suppressed under political influence or discouraged by police officers when suspects were linked to the then-ruling party.
The rise in crimes in 2025 reflects broader access to justice as victims previously denied the chance to file complaints are now coming forward, said the Press Wing.
Police stations are operating with greater neutrality and accessibility, it added.
Breakdown of recent crime data
Robbery cases stood at 1,314 in 2025, down slightly from 1,405 in 2024, though still higher than pre-2023 figures.
Offences under the Law and Order Disruption (Speedy Trial) Act fell sharply from 1,226 in 2024 to 651 in 2025.
Rioting incidents dropped to 59 in 2025 from 125 a year earlier.
Theft cases decreased significantly, with 6,354 recorded in 2025 compared to 8,652 in 2024.
Officials noted that victims can now approach law enforcement without fear of political intimidation, while police officers are no longer obstructing complaints. The drop in theft and robbery also indicates steady improvements in law enforcement alongside the freer reporting practices.
