In today’s world of smartphones, we have music on the go with the utmost ease. We just tap into Spotify or Apple Music, and we are listening to our favourite songs anytime, anywhere. These apps connect to the Internet, which in turn provides us with personalised recommendations. Back before Spotify or Apple Music, however, we had to download music in the most creative ways just to get our dopamine dose.
MP3 players once dominated the music scene. Initially considered a luxury, they became a must-have as prices dropped. Soon, it was rare to find anyone without an MP3 player in their hands.
People would download songs from YouTube or other unofficial sites, load them into their MP3 devices, and then plug in their headphones to enjoy their music. Creativity was often required to get the full experience, as many downloads contained watermarks from specific sites that interrupted listening.
MP3 players came in all shapes and sizes. Some resembled USB flash drives, while others looked like miniature mobile phones. Early flash drive MP3s typically had a few hundred megabytes of storage, gradually increasing over time to 8 GB and eventually reaching up to 128 GB.
One standout device was Apple’s iPod. Unlike regular MP3 players, iPods had a premium feel, a distinctive design, and an intuitive interface with the famous click wheel, making them a coveted accessory. Despite their high price, many young people proudly owned them and flaunted them in public.
MP3 devices started to decline as Spotify, Apple Music, and similar apps took over. These platforms allowed users to download songs legally over the Internet, removing the hassle of searching shady websites.
Before streaming, MP3 players were more than just gadgets; they were essential companions, delivering our much-needed daily dose of music.
