Muhammad Azizur Rahman, the lawmaker for Jashore-1 (Sharsha), raised the long-standing and multifaceted issues of Benapole Land Port in the National Parliament on Tuesday.
The MP brought the matter to the floor through a notice of urgent public importance under Rule 71 of the Rules of Procedure.
During the session, he emphasised that while 90 per cent of the country’s import and export items are transported through this port, it continues to be plagued by a manpower crisis, waterlogging, security risks, passenger harassment, illegal structures, and labour exploitation.
Azizur pointed out that only 148 personnel are currently working against a sanctioned strength of 216.
He further noted that during every monsoon season, goods worth hundreds of crores of taka are damaged due to waterlogging, making the development of the drainage system a matter of urgency.
Regarding the International Passenger Terminal, the MP highlighted the issue of illegal entry and the harassment of travellers. He noted that dishonest circles take advantage of the long waiting periods that occur once immigration activities commence.
He also called for the eviction of illegal shops established on railway land, the cessation of drug-related and other illegal activities, and the resolution of traffic congestion.
Highlighting the plight of the workers, Azizur spoke of their deprivation, inhumane living conditions, lack of security, and the absence of medical facilities. He demanded the immediate establishment of a 50-bed modern hospital to address these needs.
In response to the notice, Road Transport and Waterways Minister Rabiul Alam stated that the government is aware of the problems at Benapole Port.
He assured the House that effective measures are being taken for the reform of the port and that security has already been strengthened.
Addressing the issues faced by workers, the Minister mentioned that these often depend on the leasing organisations; however, he maintained that the government would continue its efforts to alleviate the suffering and hardships of the labourers.
