Morocco made history by reaching the U20 World Cup final for the first time after a thrilling 1-1 draw with France. The African nation won the semi-final on penalties after a tense battle.
They took the lead in the 31st minute following a VAR review. Baouf was fouled inside the box, and coach Mohamed Ouahbi used the green card to ask for a review. The referee awarded a penalty. Zabiri’s shot hit the post, bounced off French goalkeeper Lisandru Olmeta, and went into the net. It was counted as an own goal.
The Atlas Cubs dominated the first half. Maamma missed two good chances: one curling shot just over the bar and another from close range after a fine move by Yassine Gessime. The Moroccan midfield stayed compact and cut off France’s attacks. France managed only one shot on target, easily saved by Yanis Benchaouch.
France equalised in the 58th minute after a defensive mistake allowed Lucas Michal to score. Benchaouch made a key save soon after but had to leave the field due to injury. Gomis replaced him in goal. Morocco kept pushing late in the game, with Maamma curling a shot narrowly wide in the final minute.
Extra time was tight and cautious. France went close in the 102nd minute with a curling attempt. Five minutes later, they were reduced to ten men when Nzingoula received a second yellow card for pulling Gessime’s shirt. Morocco tried to make the most of it, and Maamma almost scored again in the 112th minute.
France created two late chances in the 118th minute, but Morocco’s defence and substitute goalkeeper stood strong. A late VAR check for handball went in Morocco’s favour. In the final moments, coach Ouahbi brought on Mesbah to replace Gomis for the penalty shootout.
The game finished 1-1, and Morocco held their nerve from the spot to reach their first-ever U20 World Cup final. They will face either Colombia or Argentina in the early hours of Monday, October 20.
