Mominul Haque became the third Bangladesh batter to score 5,000 Test runs during the fourth day of the first Test against Pakistan in Mirpur. The left-hander reached the landmark with a sweep off Noman Ali for a single to square leg and also completed his 27th Test fifty in the same moment.
Mushfiqur Rahim and Tamim Iqbal remain the only other Bangladesh batters to cross the mark in Test cricket. Mominul needed 141 innings to reach 5,000 runs. Tamim still holds Bangladesh’s quickest route to the milestone with 129 innings, while Mushfiqur took 144.
Mominul failed to turn the innings into a century despite surviving twice earlier in the knock. Pakistan dropped him on 15 and again on 45 before Shaheen Shah Afridi removed him for 56 from 120 balls. Mohammad Rizwan completed the catch behind the stumps.
His dismissal ended a 105-run stand with captain Najmul Hossain Shanto. The pair had already shared a record 170-run partnership in the first innings, Bangladesh’s highest third-wicket stand against Pakistan in Tests.
Bangladesh started the second innings with a lead of 34 but lost both openers inside the opening session with only 23 runs on the board. Mominul and Shanto then steadied the innings and pushed Pakistan back through patient batting and low-risk strokeplay.
After 45 overs, Bangladesh stretched the lead to 165 runs. Pakistan’s spinners created chances, but Bangladesh’s middle order handled the rough patches better than the top order.
Mominul now sits behind only Tamim and Mushfiqur on Bangladesh’s all-time Test run charts. His run of five consecutive fifties has also given Bangladesh stability in a series where the top order has struggled for long stretches.
