Mohamed Salah will leave Liverpool at the end of the current season, bringing his nine-year spell at Anfield to a close.
The club confirmed an agreement has been reached with the 33-year-old Egypt international to depart this summer, despite the contract he signed last year running until 2027.
Salah will leave as one of Liverpool’s most decorated modern players. He has won eight major trophies, including two Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League in 2019. He also sits third on the club’s all-time goalscoring list with 255 goals.
His future had been uncertain since an explosive interview in December, after he was left as an unused substitute in a 3–3 draw against Leeds United — the third straight match in which he was overlooked by head coach Arne Slot.
Salah said he felt “thrown under the bus” and suggested his relationship with Slot had broken down. He left open the possibility of a January exit and claimed he had been made a scapegoat for Liverpool’s struggles, adding that “someone does not want me in the club”.
He was later omitted from the squad for the Champions League tie away to Inter Milan, a match Liverpool won 1–0. The decision was taken by sporting director Richard Hughes in consultation with the club’s ownership and Slot.
Speaking before that fixture, Slot said he had “no clue” whether Salah had already played his final game for Liverpool and expressed surprise at suggestions their relationship had deteriorated.
However, Salah returned to the fold after this winter’s Africa Cup of Nations and has started 13 matches for the club since 21 January.
A club statement said:
“With plenty still left to play for this season, Salah remains fully focused on achieving the best possible finish to the campaign for Liverpool. The time to properly celebrate his legacy and achievements will come later in the year when he bids farewell to Anfield.”
