Rumeen Farhana, the Member of Parliament for the Brahmanbaria-2 constituency, stated in the Jatiya Sangsad on Monday that while various cultures thrive across the globe, Bangladesh is currently gripped by a “mob culture.”
Speaking during a parliamentary session on Monday afternoon, she addressed the House regarding the erosion of law and the rise of vigilante justice.
By contrasting the situation in Bangladesh with the rest of the world, Farhana observed that while other nations celebrate cultures involving music and dance, Bangladesh has become defined by a culture of the mob.
She specifically noted the presence of the home minister, pointing out that despite his repeated assurances that “mob culture” would no longer be tolerated in the country, such incidents continue to occur. The MP mentioned that the Minister’s directives are not being implemented effectively.
According to Farhana, this culture of mob violence has been prevalent across the country for the past year and a half and has persisted even two months into the current government’s tenure.
She highlighted several specific cases to illustrate the severity of the situation, including the recent killing of a spiritual leader, or “pir,” who was beaten to death in Kushtia.
Rumeen Farhana cited a murder in Chattogram that took place 18 months ago due to mob violence, noting that justice has yet to be served in that case. She stated that numerous similar incidents are happening throughout the country.
