Miscreants have set fire to BNP office in Jhenaidah’s Maheshpur, damaging furniture and other belongings inside the facility.
The incident took place on Friday night at the Ward No 4 BNP office in Shreerampur village under Mandarbariya Union of the upazila.
Local residents said the attackers poured flammable substances on the office and set it on fire around 1am.
Chairs, tables and other furniture inside the office were burnt, along with a picture of the party chief.
Residents also reported hearing several explosion-like sounds during the incident before rushing to the scene and bringing the fire under control. Maheshpur Upazila BNP Organising Secretary Ziaur Rahman said there had been a dispute a few days earlier involving local BNP and Jamaat leaders and activists.
“I do not know who set fire to the BNP office,” he said.
Local BNP leaders and activists said several explosions also occurred during the incident.
Maheshpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mehedi Hasan said police visited the site after the incident.
He said no evidence of crude bombs or firecrackers was found at the scene.
“Flammable substances such as petrol or kerosene were used to set the fire. The office shutter was closed,” said Maheshpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mehedi Hasan.
Plastic chairs and tables inside the room were burnt, and explosions might have occurred due to fire and smoke in the enclosed space, he said.
Police are investigating the incident and legal action will be taken if a complaint is filed, the officer added.
