Mexico City is racing to complete major work projects before the World Cup begins next month. Workers are upgrading metro stations and parts of the city’s main airport before the opening match on June 11.
The work has caused problems for many residents. Some people feel the projects focus more on visitors than on local people.
On Calzada de Tlalpan, crews are building a new path for walkers and cyclists. The route stretches for almost two kilometers. The project has also caused traffic and road closures in the area.
Local teacher Blanca Abascal said she understands the need to improve the city. She said the work could help create a better image for visitors. Still, she said daily life has become difficult. She added that noise at night has made it hard for people to sleep.
Mexico, Canada, and the United States will host this year’s World Cup together. Mexico City will stage five matches. One of them will be Mexico’s group game against South Africa on June 11.
Workers are also fixing metro stations such as San Antonio Abad and Auditorio. They are repairing entrances, platforms, and stained glass areas.
University student Halim Castro said many projects appear to focus more on appearance than important repairs. He said officials should also spend money on older parts of the metro system that need attention.
City officials defended the work. They said the projects are important for the future of the transport system. Metro director Adrián Rubalcava said the World Cup helped speed up repairs that were already needed.
He said the work will improve stations that need urgent care and leave them in better condition for daily users.
Some residents still worry about how money is being spent across the city. Retired resident Arturo Castro said some areas are receiving more attention while others continue to face transport and service problems.
Renovation work has also reached Benito Juárez International Airport. Parts of the airport have closed during the work, creating problems for some travelers arriving in the city.
