Filmmaker Na Hong-jin presented his in-competition science fiction thriller ‘Hope’ at the Cannes Film Festival, where the audience responded with extended applause after the screening.
The reaction came during the film’s premiere, which reportedly featured several action set-pieces that drew enthusiastic responses from the audience throughout the two-hour-and-40-minute runtime.
Na Hong-jin thanked viewers for staying engaged with what he described as an ambitious and lengthy cinematic experience, as the screening concluded with sustained applause inside the festival venue.
‘Hope’ features a large international cast including Hwang Jung-min, Zo In-sung, Hoyeon, Alicia Vikander, Michael Fassbender, Taylor Russell and Cameron Britton.
Set in a remote village near the Demilitarised Zone, the story follows police chief Bum-seok after local youths report the appearance of a tiger, triggering panic and events that push the community into confronting an unexpected reality.
The Cannes screening marks Na Hong-jin’s fourth appearance at the festival, following earlier entries including ‘The Chaser’, ‘The Yellow Sea’ and ‘The Wailing’, which have previously screened across different sections of the event.
Written and directed by Na Hong-jin, ‘Hope’ is produced under Forged Films, with international distribution rights handled by Neon for North America and English-language territories, while Mubi has acquired rights across several international markets.
