Lionel Messi scored his first goal since the death of his father as Inter Miami drew 2-2 with Philadelphia Union on Thursday.
Messi’s father and longtime representative, Jorge Messi, died at the age of 68 in Rosario, Argentina, on August 8.
The Argentine star returned to the scoresheet in an emotional moment at Subaru Park.
Messi scored in the 26th minute to put Miami 2-1 ahead. He got away from his marker before finding the net with a left footed shot.
His teammates quickly surrounded and embraced him after the goal.
The 39 year old also played a key role in Miami’s opening goal as he provided the assist.
Messi had paid an emotional tribute to his father last week. He spoke about the pain of losing someone who had played such an important role in his life and career.
Philadelphia later fought back to earn a 2-2 draw.
The result ended Miami’s run of three straight defeats. The defending MLS Cup champions had struggled for results before Wednesday’s match.
Messi has now scored 13 goals this season. He sits one goal behind Dallas forward Petar Musa in the race for the MLS Golden Boot.
Messi won the Golden Boot last season and remains in the fight to retain the award.
The Argentine also led his country to the World Cup final earlier this year, where Argentina lost to Spain.
