Kylian Mbappe suffered a left hamstring injury during La Liga action for Real Madrid against Real Betis on 25 April, leaving both club and country assessing his fitness ahead of key fixtures.
Real Madrid confirmed the injury in a medical statement. “After tests carried out by our medical team, Mbappe has been diagnosed with an injury to the semitendinosus muscle in his left leg,” the club said. The diagnosis clarifies the earlier uncertainty around discomfort and confirms a muscular issue rather than a minor knock.
Mbappe left the pitch in the 81st minute of the 1-1 draw after feeling discomfort. The substitution decision indicates he recognised the issue early, which may reduce the risk of further damage but does not guarantee a quick return.
Real Madrid have not set a recovery timeline. The absence of a timeframe suggests the club will assess his response to rehabilitation before making selection decisions for upcoming matches, including the El Clasico on 11 May.
The injury arrives during a difficult period for Madrid. The team trails Barcelona by 11 points in the title race, and Mbappe’s absence removes their most consistent attacking output, with 24 league goals in 28 matches this season.
France now face uncertainty ahead of the World Cup, which begins on 11 June in the United States, Mexico and Canada. Mbappe remains central to their plans, and any delay in recovery could affect their preparation for the opening match against Senegal on 16 June.
Reports suggest Mbappe may miss the remainder of the club season. The focus appears to have shifted towards protecting him from a more serious setback, especially with major international commitments approaching.
